Car Rental, Taxi or Private Transfer from the Airport in Tunisia: Honest Comparison 2026

For a stay of 4 days or more with multiple trips, airport car rental in Tunisia is almost always the most economical and flexible option. A taxi remains relevant for a single short journey under 25 km. A private transfer is justified at night, with young children or with a lot of luggage.

Why comparing before you arrive can save you 60 to 80 EUR

At the arrivals exit of Tunisia's four international airports Tunis-Carthage, Enfidha, Monastir and Djerba three options await you. Choosing without thinking can be costly. Some travellers pay 90 DT for a taxi on a route a rental city car covers for 35 EUR per day, unlimited mileage included. Others rent a car for an entire all-inclusive hotel stay without ever leaving the resort.

The pricing data in this comparison comes from our on-the-ground observations and the information published by OACA (the Tunisian Civil Aviation and Airports Authority). For general information on Tunisian tourism, theWikipedia article on tourism in Tunisia provides a useful overview of passenger flows by airport.

The table below compares the two main categories (taxi or transfer versus car rental) on the criteria that truly matter for your stay.

Car rental vs taxi: the criteria that matter

Objective criteria for choosing your transport from a Tunisian airport. Airport car rental in Tunisia becomes cost-effective from day 4, or whenever you plan several independent trips.

Indicative 2026 taxi fares, variable by time of day and driver. Car rental includes unlimited mileage and basic third-party insurance.

Critère

Taxi or transfer

Car rental

Recommandé

Airport to nearby hotel (under 25 km)

Independent excursions away from the resort

Access to remote sites (Dougga, Korbous, Matmata)

100% flexible schedule, leave whenever you want

7-day stay with 3 or more excursions

Night transfer for a late flight after 10 pm

Comfort with 4 suitcases and a pushchair

Oui / Inclus

Partiel / Limité

Non / Absent

Real distances: a key figure before comparing prices

The distance between the airport and your destination radically changes the economic equation. A 15 DT taxi for 8 km in the city centre is reasonable. That same taxi at 95 DT for 65 km to Hammamet becomes absurd if you are staying 7 days with daily excursions. The times below are measured outside peak hours.

In July and August, on the Tunis-Carthage to A1 motorway corridor, add 15 to 20 minutes on Friday afternoons. At Enfidha on a Sunday evening with a charter flight, taxi queues can stretch an extra 30 minutes.

Our recommendation for each type of traveller. There is no universal answer: everything depends on your itinerary, your group and the length of your stay.

Avoid shared taxis (louages) with young children and large luggage

Terminal guide: what we actually observe on the ground

Each Tunisian airport has its own transport dynamics. What you experience at Tunis-Carthage has nothing in common with the atmosphere at Djerba on a Thursday evening charter flight. The fares below are based on our field observations and client feedback from 2024 and 2026.

TUN

Tunis-Carthage Airport

The country's main hub. Serves Tunis, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and the A1 corridor to Hammamet and Sousse. For more about this airport, see the Wikipedia page on Tunis-Carthage Airport.

Car rental: desk in the arrivals zone, contract signed in under 10 minutes. Direct departure onto the A1 or to the northern suburbs with no shuttle or extra wait.

White taxi to the city centre: 15 to 20 DT daytime. To Hammamet via the A1: 80 to 100 DT negotiated. A 3-day rental city car costs less than two taxi return trips.

Private transfer: 40 to 55 EUR to Gammarth or La Marsa, 60 to 75 EUR to Hammamet. Useful for flights landing after 10 pm when taxis are scarce.

NBE

Enfidha-Hammamet Airport

Gateway to Cap Bon. Over 90% of passengers head to Hammamet, Nabeul or Sousse. The arrivals area is compact and taxi negotiation starts as soon as you exit customs. Wikipedia page on Enfidha Airport.

Car rental: our most popular package at this airport. Direct delivery at the arrivals exit, 30 minutes to Yasmine Hammamet via the GP1.

Taxi: 40 to 50 DT to Hammamet, 50 to 150 DT to Sousse. No meter agree the price before getting in. Avoid any offer above 60 DT for Hammamet.

Private transfer: often included in tour-operator packages. When booked independently, 35 to 45 EUR to Hammamet.

MIR

Monastir Habib Bourguiba Airport

Direct charter flights from Europe. Close to Sousse (20 min) and Monastir town centre (10 min). Quieter than Enfidha but the same pricing logic applies. Wikipedia page on Monastir Airport.

Car rental: ViaCar's second busiest location. Ideal for a self-drive circuit covering Sousse, Kairouan and El Jem.

Taxi: 15 to 20 DT to Sousse, 8 to 12 DT to Monastir town centre. Cheap for a single trip but limiting if multiple excursions are planned.

Private transfer: 25 to 35 EUR to Sousse, 20 to 30 EUR to a Monastir hotel. Comfortable for families arriving after a long flight.

DJE

Djerba-Zarzis Airport

Island in the Gulf of Gabès, 514 km² in area. Taxis exist but become expensive over time. For a general overview of the island, see the Wikipedia article on Djerba.

Car rental: pickup at the arrivals exit, 20 minutes to Houmt Souk. Essential from day two if you want to visit Erriadh, Guellala and Ras Rmel.

Taxi: 12 to 18 DT to Houmt Souk, 25 to 35 DT to the Midoun tourist zone. Everything is negotiated, no meter.

Private transfer: 25 to 40 EUR depending on the hotel. Only adequate if your stay is an all-inclusive with no independent outings.

How does the season change your transport choice?

In high season, availability and queues transform the airport experience. Here is what each period concretely means for your arrival in Tunisia.

High season (June, July, August)

June, July, August

🌡 28 to 38 °C

Demande

Book your rental car or transfer before your flight. Taxis are saturated during charter hours on Friday and Sunday. A pre-booked private transfer saves you 20 to 40 minutes of negotiation at Enfidha airport.

Private transfer: zero wait on arrival

Car rental: total independence on all routes

Taxi: inflated fares, frequent refusal to use meter

Car rental: automatic models out of stock without advance booking

Shoulder season (spring and autumn)

April, May, September, October

🌡 20 to 28 °C

Demande

Best period to compare options calmly. Taxi negotiable at reasonable prices for short trips. Tunisia airport car rental still advantageous from 5 days' stay.

Taxi easy to find with no wait

Car rental: good rates and wide choice of vehicles available

Some October charter flights can briefly saturate the airports

Low season (winter)

November, December, January, February, March

🌡 12 to 20 °C

Demande

Cheap taxi for single trips. Long-term rental very competitive. Private transfer useful at night or for isolated destinations with limited winter service.

No queue at the airport

Rental rates at their lowest for the year

Fewer direct flights to Djerba in winter

Reduced shared-taxi (louage) schedules on some secondary routes

Frequently asked questions about transport from Tunisian airports

Direct answers to the questions most asked by our clients before arrival.

For a single short trip (airport to hotel under 20 km), yes: expect 15 to 100 DT, i.e. 5 to 8 EUR. Once you make 3 or more trips, or stay 4 days with excursions, car rental generally works out cheaper than a series of negotiated taxis.

Yes, a private transfer must always be booked before your flight. There is no such thing as an on-demand private transfer: it is a driver waiting for you with a sign, booked online or through your hotel. Expect 30 to 70 EUR depending on distance and vehicle.

Yes, that is the norm at Enfidha, Monastir and Djerba. Always agree on the price before getting in. At Tunis-Carthage, ask for the meter for urban journeys. Avoid non-white vehicles that offer themselves as taxis without an official badge.

The island of Djerba measures 25 km by 30 km. Taxis exist but become expensive from day two. Car rental at DJE airport is the most rational solution for visiting Erriadh, Guellala and the southern beaches independently.

For 2 hotel days with no outings, a return transfer is enough. However, if you plan 2 distant excursions such as Kairouan and El Jem from Sousse, car rental is more comfortable and often cheaper than multiple taxis over those 2 days.

Enfidha (NBE) is the closest: 30 minutes and 30 km via the GP1. Tunis-Carthage also works but adds 45 minutes of driving. Monastir is too far south for Cap Bon, at least 1h30 to Hammamet.
